The mountain guides of La Rébenne are passionate about their work. Certified by the French government, they are specialists in diverse areas such as geology, biology, history, the environment, working with children and youth. These professionals will share with you, in perfect safety, their knowledge of the mountain milieu both natural and human. For you they'll make the very stones, clouds, animals and plants speak of the history of these mountains.

The Way of Saint James (Santiago de Compostella)
through the Pyreneen foothills

Trip of 7 days, 6 nights with 6 days of walking

Pyrénéen trail loaded with history and symbols. From the famous village Le Mas d’Azil, through the romanesque town of St Lizier to St Bertrand de Comminges, you’ll walk through a land where the popular faith and a bountious Nature shaped a magical landscape between the Couserans and Comminges areas. You’ll cross the charming villages of the sunlit foothills and discover their splendid churches clinging to the mountainside. More than a hike, this is a veritable voyage through sumptuous Pyreneen landscapes.

Program

Day 1 : Le Mas d’Azil - Rimont - 5h
We leave the charming village of Le Mas d’Azil and pass through the hills of the Plantaurel with its small villages nestled in the valleys, to arrive in Rimont.

Day 2 : Rimont - St Lizier 3h05
This short stage brings us to St Lizier where we discover its fabulous patrimony during the afternoon: the Bishops’ treasure, the romanesque cloister and the cathedral, as well as the 18th-century pharmacy that pilgrims relied on over the centuries.

Day 3 : St Lizier - Audressein 4h10
Today we ascend through the Lez valley where we see the charming churches which mark out the way and testify to the popular faith of this area.

Day 4 : Audressein - St Lary 4h15
As we climb to mid-elevation the trail becomes a bit more winding, passing through the charming mountain villages that look out over the valleys.

Day 5 : St Lary - Juzet d’Izaut 5h45
A beautiful stage passing from one side to the other of the col de Portet d’Aspet which brings us from the Couserans to the Comminges. The splendid descent through woodland to Juzet d’Izaut allows to observe the rich and varied local wildlife (deer, wild boars and even… bears !).

Day 6 : Juzet d'Izaut - Loures-Barousse 5h55
At the col des Ares, the landscape opens out and the mountains of Luchonnais are revealed. A magic moment when the majestic Cathedral of St Bertrand de Comminges appears, during the descent to Loures-Barousse.

Day 7 : Loures-Barousse - St Bertrand de Comminges 0h50
A short stage which give us time to tour the town and its cathedral. We separate in the afternoon under the shadow of the imposing ramparts.
