What if your mountain bike could replace Modestine, Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous donkey? From Le-Puy-en-Velay to Saint-Jean-du-Gard, this mountain bike route follows in the footsteps of Robert-Louis Stevenson. It takes you over the volcanic hills of the Velay, the rugged highlands of the legendary Gévaudan, Mont Lozère and then the crests and valleys of the Cévenne des Camisards. A 250km mountain biking adventure which alternates between valleys, volcanic plateaus and forests, crossing villages filled with history, before taking some height and passing over the tops of the Goulet, Mont Lozère and the Bougès Massif. At the end of your stay, a pleasant climb up to the Col St Pierre followed by a descent through a beautiful pine forest will take you to Saint-Jean-du-Gard, just as Stevenson and Modestine did in 1878.

Depart from Chasseradès, in the Lozère, and follow the second part of the journey of Robert Louis Stevenson and his donkey Modestine, who hiked this route in 1878.This second stage of the Route of Stevenson will transport you through the Cévennes, crossing Mont Lizère (1699m), Bougès (1421m), the Mimente valley and across moors, forests and fields.This trip is also an opportunity to discover and gain an understanding of the history of the Camisards, via emblematic French Protestant villages (Pont-de-Monvert, Florac, St Germain de Calberte, etc.).Like Robert Louis Stevenson, you will finish your hike in Saint-Jean-du-Gard, the regional capital of the Camisards.

From Puy-en-Velay to Chasseradès, follow in the footsteps of Robert Louis Stevenson and his donkey Modestine, who travelled this route in 1878. This first stage of the Route of Stevenson takes you through the volcanic landscapes of Velay and Margeride: vast open spaces scattered with blocks of granite.After crossing Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille, Le Bouchet-St-Nicolas, Pradelles and Langogne, you enter the province of Gévaudan.Long after any traces of the famous Beast of Gévaudan faded, this region continues to feed the imagination. Continuing your walk through the ever-varied landscapes, you arrive at Chasseradès, a pretty little hamlet criss-crossed by narrow winding lanes, and its Roman church.
